So... shit...

Been down and out for a few days... sick babies cannot be avoided.

So, here we are, waiting to find out if there is going to be a limited military strike against Assad and the Syrian regime. I can't help but think something stinks here. For two, almost three years now, Syria has been caught in the throws of a civil war that has progressed down tried and true paths and now we find out that we may get pulled into it.

But why?

For since this started in 2011 there have been uncounted numbers of truly horrific things going on, from both sides. Like this. And we are by no means getting the full story, obviously because the media in Syria is in fact controlled by Assad. But that's not the point, why wait until this supposed attack happened on August 21? There were reports that there were chemical attacks earlier in the summer but no one batted an eye. That special "Red Line" the President had spoken about, a year prior to the date, had been crossed but he had nothing to say on the matter.  For those who don't know what I'm on a about... watch this

Now, what the President said there is very sober, very sane. Hell, I agree with the man on the point. These type of weapons were banned for a freaking reason. An the man clearly says so. I can't beleive I'm saying this, but GO WHAT'S-HIS-NAME!!!! Now all that has to be done is stick to his guns right? Right... but wait... what's this?

Dammit he did it again! I hate it when he does this... It's really not hard, say what you mean and mean what you say.  He is trying to plug this on the "International Community" when you just saw him saw that he would consider it a "Red Line".

I love the smell of politics in the morning...

Either way, should or shouldn't we get involved? That is the real question.

I have heard a lot on both sides, but what we need to ask ourselves is this: would you be for this if this was a President Romney?

If the answer is "no"... well you're part of the problem. Of course, if your answer was "yes", sorry you're out in the cold on this too. Be honest with your convictions, if you were opposed to Iraq on the anti-war platform then this really shouldn't be any different.  Both wars were ill conceived and there is no way that this turns out good for anyone involved.

Plus what is the plan post-strike?   Is there a plan in place for the possibility of a Syrian strike on Israel as retaliation for our "incredibly small" strike, as SOS Kerry put it.

Iran has said they will retaliate if America hits Syria. Syria being one of Iran's closest allies. and what does Russia do? Syria plays host to one of the few warm sea ports that the Russian navy has access to.

But the real kicker is this: I don't like the man's politics but he is still the President, I respect the power of the office. We need to back him on this for one reason and on reason only...

This clown...

Ali Khamenei, he is the supreme leader of Iran and is watching what this feckless President is going to do. If we blink, he sees it and knows that this might be a good time to have a run amok on everything crappy that he's been doing. Only now, out in the open.

President What's-his-name has put us in a position where the resolve of the US is on display, if we don't carry through, well we just said to all the other dirt bags of the world "Hey, don't worry, we'll get upset but really not do anything about it"

I don't want this, I don't want the possibility of Amrican soldiers being pushd into another ill conceived war, but if we don't do this we leave the door open for many other way worse problems.

Problems, that I don't think this man is up to the task to handle.

"You mean there are cameras? That record what I say... Shit"

The Other Side... grab a coffee...

When people her that you are a "Conservative" or a "Republican" (gasp) they seem to make certain assumptions about how you think on certain subjects. To be fair, the converse is true if you were to say you are a "Liberal".  But in the interest of clarity, we'll lay out what is going on in the mind of a "Conservative" here.

A lot of people seem to run on the adage that if you are young that you have a bleeding heart whereas as an old person you have no heart.  Based solely on the fact that many more youths tend toward being more liberal and older folks seem to be more conservative. Both sides are patently false.  I have come into contact with a great many twenty-somethings that are staunch Conservatives and an equal amount of older folks that are stone cold Liberals. Didn't matter what their race, education, or economic position was. They were just the way they were and probably had been for as long as they can remember.

To point though there are great many things that people have dead wrong about "Right Wing" or "Conservative" people. but we'll attack five today just for the sake of sanity.

1) All conservatives are religious fanatics:
It's fairly common for conservative ideology to be dismissed as the product as an overactive amount of religious fervor.  This stem from the fact that many Christians, Evangelicals and Catholics tend to embrace the key facets of conservatism more readily. Such as limited government, strong national defense, and the preservation of family values.  While it's fair to say that most conservatives use faith as a guiding principle, most of us try to keep it out of political discourse., recognizing faith as something that is intensely personal. Conservatives are more commonly of the opinion that the Constitution guarantees freedom of religion not freedom from religion. This means to most conservatives that public practicing of faith is okay, whereas wholesale proselyting is not.

About 99.99999% of Conservatives think this is F*cking retarded
2) conservatives are racists:

Okay, for one...REALLY?

The frequent accusation that conservatives are racist is laughable. Most conservatives are not racist, sure there are the random ass-hats that the media always seem to round up for something, but on a whole we're not. In fact most conservatives believe in equality no matter what the background, skin colour, or whatever reason we're being called racist this week.  What we do oppose is stuff like affirmative action. Conservatives believe affirmative action actually fosters racism because it provides certain groups with social, political or educational advantages that are unavailable to others based solely on the colour ones skin. True equality must mean equal opportunities for everyone, period. Now many people will point out that in '64 (50 years ago... hold on, half a century ago) Barry Goldwater was highly opposed to the civil rights bill in congress... while this is true, they seem to forget that this was the only in carnation of the civil rights movement he ever officially opposed. He did in fact vote yeah for every single one prior to the '64 bill. Plus, trying to peg that on a whole mess of the population is well... rather discriminatory...

A low blow, I'm aware, but since we're talking stereotypes.

3) Conservatives are homophobes:

Not everyone who opposes gay marriage opposes the lifestyles of those in the LGBT community. fact is, most of us really don't care what you do with your spare time so long as it is legal and honestly is not hurting anyone else.  Thomas Jefferson said, "So long as it neither breaks my bones nor picks my pocket", and honestly, this is how the vast majority of conservatives feel. Now, many look at the resistance that conservatives have to the concept of homsexual marriage as proof positive that we actually hate gays and lesbians. That is dumb. Imagine this particular strawman: "I don't like crepes, I therefore hate the French", sounds pretty stupid huh?

Most conservatives are actually very much in support of civil unions, that would grant the same legal status to homo-sexual couples. the very solid push back against marriage is this; throughout history marriage has been between men and women. Even the Greeks of antiquity, with their somewhat free-wheeling ways, knew this.  I'm sorry if it offends sensibilities but that has been a cultural norm for the last 5000 years of recorded human history. It's just there, always has been.

Imagine this scenario; the NRA decides, after the last 30 some odd years, to take on the rainbow flag as their emblem and refuse to back off of it.  How furious would the gay community be at having something that is so solidly, culturally theirs, being used by the NRA. It's supplanting something that has historically been, and is, of great cultural import and is now not theirs anymore. I know a lot of you will scoff at the comparison, but consider the base idea behind it.

Absolutely nothing to do with the subject... But look at the guy to the right, he looks terrified!

4) Conservatives are warmongers:

Of all of the Presidents that have led the USA into wars over the last hundred years all, save two, have been Democrats. Woodrow Wilson dragged us kicking and screaming into WW1, Roosevelt had WW2, Truman was Korea (albeit at the behest of the newly formed UN), Kennedy started Vietnam, Bush V.1 took us into Iraq (again at the behest of the UN), Clinton pushed us into Bosnia, and Bush V.2 pushed us back into the sandbox of Iraq.

Now, am I saying that Democrats/Liberals are unscrupulous war-hawks, no, I'm just pointing out facts.  Truth is, most conservatives hate the idea of dragging the country to war because one; we really don't like flag draped coffins and two; wars cost a lot of money. We really would prefer not to send your sons and daughters off to fight unless there is a really good reason. War is a nasty business that hurts the economy and causes nothing but pain for both parties, but sometimes it's necessary.

In the end we would love nothing more than to never have to resort to using arms and putting our military into harms way.

And really, there are way better things to fight about.
5) Conservatives hate Liberals:

Not true in the slightest.  For the most part we don't hate our Liberal friends, we just don't understand where they are coming from.

I mean really, imagine hating someone for the way that they think... it's a pretty stupid thing to do and is entirely counter-productive. But if you do, please go play in traffic.

Conservatives have some pretty good ideas and so do Liberals, I think at the end of the day we are all trying desperately to get to the same place but we have very different maps. Ours says right at Albuquerque (whew... thank you spell check) and theirs says left.

We cannot understand how the idea that government can do it better than private industry.

We think in terms of individual rights as opposed to collective group rights. someone getting a leg up because of their skin confounds us. It's almost like saying "You're not good enough, so we'll make it easier for you." It just gets us the wrong way.

If we really wanted to we could just piss off the whole system and see what happens, but we won't, because we are just as vested in America being at its best as the Left is. We as conservatives, and they as liberals need to get that right first and then we start attacking the issues. Instead of each other.

I know a lot of people will baulk at what they've seen here but really, from your day to day life do you really see Conservatives screaming bible verses, calling blacks nasty names, trying to demean gay people, and sitting around with a massive erection about some coming conflict?

But i think we can all agree that this man is a tit.
